Students in first and second grade learned the song “Hayride!” and then we pretended to go on an actual hayride- we even had a truck driver. Everyone was a great driver and I’m happy to report that we did not crash into any apple trees or run over any pumpkins! Next week, second graders will learn to sing the song in a round– when one group of students sings the song, and then another group of students sings the same song but a little bit after the first group starts. This creates cool sounds called “harmony”!
Students split into two groups so that they can “hold onto their part” better, without being confused by the other singers.
Students in fourth grade used kick balls and guiros to keep the tempo in the song “In the Hall of the Mountain King”- a song from The Peer Gynt Suite which is a piece for orchestra by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. We discovered that the balls had to bounce faster and faster throughout the song (this is called an accelerando). We also noticed that, in order to be heard, the guiros had to play louder and louder throughout the song (this is called a crescendo).
The Peer Gynt Suite tells a story of a naughty boy named Peer Gynt who kidnaps a bride at her own wedding as a practical joke. (Although, as one student whose father is a police officer pointed out to us, kidnapping is a crime and not a practical joke!) Fortunately, this is just a fairy tale. The boy then ends up being kidnapped himself by a group of trolls who live in a mountain! The music in “In the Hall of the Mountain King” tells the story of Peer Gynt escaping the trolls and running from them.
Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade conducted scavenger hunts in the music room!
Students in Mrs. Correia’s third grade class are determined to find out how many famous musicians they can find on the music room walls!
Students in Mrs. Jamali’s fifth grade class are scrambling to find “matches” to their own music opinion answers!

Welcome back West students! The music room is all set up and ready to go. We have a few new items in the room, including a new white board (no more chalk! :-), a new easel, a new portable speaker, new posters, and some new instruments! I’m excited for the new school year!
